The Kalahari Desert is in
Southern Africa. 900,000 km from the Kalahari Desert is covering much of
Botswana , and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The only
permanent river, the Okavango, flows into a delta in the Northwest. The
surface is mostly covered with red soil, except in the East where large
patches of sand are found. When a heavy rain occures, pans of water
form in the extensive mud flats. But the Kalahari is not a true Desert. Animals:
The Kalahari desert has got a lot
of animals. Here is some inflammation about the Kalahari Desert lion.
The most famous of all the animals in the Kalahari Desert is the
Kalahari Desert lion. The Kalahari lion is skinnier , but larger in
build than the Kruger park lions , with a darker mane. However , it
doesn't have the full dark mane , stretching to the hind legs , of
the now extinct Cape lion. Parts of the Kalahari
receive over 250mm of rainfall making the Kalahari a fossil Desert.
Summer temperatures in the Kalahari goes up from 20 to 40c.
Kalahari Animals:
Animals that live in this area
including brown hyenas, lions, meerkats,several species of antelope
including gemsbok), and many species of birds and reptile.
Plants:
In the Kalahari there are 400
identified plant species including the wild watermelon and tsamma melon.
Kalahari Minerals:
In the Kalahari there are large
coal, copper, nickel and uranium. One of the largest diamond mines in
the world is in the north-Eastern part of the Kalahari.
